In Sheridan, I encountered one of a great downtown arts program. For the size of Sheridan, the volume of sculptures rivaled cities like Milan. I was there three hours going through the inventory. I wondered if they had a formal main street program. At the end of the street, I took a picture of larger sculptures leading into the town and saw the Main Street office.

I spoke to Zoila Perry, who was the executive director. What she did was spectacular, and of course, she wanted no credit and lauded the effort of others. So if you are in the area on the way to Mt Rushmore, you should stop here and check it out. The sheer volume of the sculptures is worth taking the time to see.

There were some good historical murals like the Conrad General Merchandise depiction. Also, there was a great use of neon downtown as the Mint Bar bucking bronco carried the western theme of the town’s origins.

Over on a side street near the Tin Man sculpture, a significant building for sale was vacant. There were some spot vacancies, but for the most part, the town was full. There were not a lot of people in masks in Sheridan.

Locally beloved “Hot Tamale Louie” (Zarif Khan) is depicted in one of the sculptures.
